How do I operate a fire extinguisher?Operating a fire extinguisher is easy, as long as you remember the acronym PASS:P– Pull the pin near the extinguisher – Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire—not at the top of the flames!S– Squeeze the trigger carefully. Remember, the extinguishant coming out is going to come out fast, so don’t spray it out faster than you can handle!S– Sweep the nozzle from side to side so you can hit all areas of the fire. Take special care to make sure the flames don’t spread to anything like drapes, trash cans, or the fire has died down, stay near the area for a few minutes to make sure it doesn’t reflash. And even when you have extinguished it, call the fire department just to be safe.

How do I know if I have enough fire extinguishers in my building?

While the specifics vary from building to building, in general you want to have enough fire extinguishers so that you don’t have to travel more than 50 – 75 ft to reach one. This will minimize response time and help keep you as safe as I need to train my employees on how to use fire extinguishers?

Yes. According to the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 29, part 1910 (OSHA) section 157 paragraph & 2 states… “Where the employer has provided Portable Fire Extinguishers for employee use in the workplace, the employer shall also provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principles of fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage fire fighting. The employer shall provide the education required in paragraph (g)(1) of this section upon initial employment and at least annually thereafter.”
