Sometimes customers, especially small businesses that don't use a lot of hot water, will call and say their water smells like rotten eggs. That could be caused by bacteria living in the water tank. It's harmless, but really smells awful! According to this article, water heaters used to come factory-set at 140 degrees. Because of litigation, heaters are now set at 120 degrees, which isn't hot enough to kill some bacteria, and if your tank just sits unused, the water will brew a tank of yucky smelling water. The best tip to try first is turn up the heat. 132 degree water should do the trick. Please don't burn yourself or your babies in the tub!! Let us know if we can help.
Several months ago we had a strong sulfur smell in our hot water. We called the company who installed our water softener, who said it was our water heater. Since the water heater was getting on in years, we replaced it and all was well.

Today's minute dusting of snow reminded me to remind you to please know where the main water service is located outside your home - that little cover by the curb or in the lawn near the street. Some repairs require the water to be shut off. If your main shut off valve doesn't work, or leaks, water can be turned off "at the street" *IF* if can be located. If we get some substantial snow and you know you have a plumber coming, make sure you mark that curbcock!

Just for fun
I imagine that one day the water flow stopped in a certain pipe. Further investigation pinpointed the problem to a value, which could no longer be opened or closed. The valve was removed with the aid of a saw, and voila! the pipe was completely clogged with fine, colorless and gemmy gypsum crystals. Gypsum is often deposited as a thin crust in pipes and tanks handling hard water, but here the case is extreme. At Wacker Plumbing, we try hard to keep our prices fair and low enough to be competitive. Except for a once-a-year holiday mailer, we don't offer coupons or specials. Companies that can offer a coupon aren't offering you their best rate up front. We don't have a trip charge or diagnostic fee. Our technicians arrive ready to make your repair. We do have a minimum service call which covers up to your first 30 minutes of labor. After 30 minutes, we charge regular rates by 15 minute increments. If we have to return a second time with parts, you are charged as if we had not left the first time.
