Dear Racers: I sent an email to you from toni.case@cityofaspen.com -- if you didn't receive it see below. We want to give you all a quick update on tomorrow’s event. A recent windstorm has laid down 8-10 trees across the course. Racers should be able to jump (or crawl!) over them with no problem. We work closely with the Forest Service on the Golden Leaf and we want you to know that it is possible to encounter Moose and or Black Bears on the course. Additionally, we mark several sensitive wetlands (9) and ask that you stay on the trail at those short choke points- in other words no passing there. Most are marked with pink survey tape and the last, on Buttermilk, is signed. We are likely to have rain for the event- we have run it in the rain before. But please dress accordingly for wet conditions and cool fall temperatures. Remember that if you are immobilized by a twisted ankle (or worse) you can get hypothermic very quickly. The Golden Leaf is a backcountry race and you are ultimately responsible for your own rescue and preparation for course and weather conditions. We are psyched for the race and we put a great deal of effort into creating a quality event for you so we will do everything we can to make it a “go” on Saturday. In the end, Ma Nature is in charge and we don’t want to put a lot of people out on the course in grim conditions for a number of reasons including the protection of a very beautiful forest resource. We won’t make any decisions about whether to go for it or not without great consideration. Check your emails for any further updates after 6am tomorrow morning. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow! Ute Mountaineer
