Becoming a better hitter isn't just physical training...mental preparation is a key factor that should be focused on, but is often an "after thought." How do you mentally prepare stepping up to the plate? Professional scout and performance coach, Steve Springer will be at Extra Innings Middleton on February 26th to host the "mental side of hitting." Steve Springer has been a professional scout for the Toronto Blue Jays and a "performance coach" working with big league batters on their mental approach to hitting. Don't miss this opportunity to spend a morning with someone of this caliber. Each participant will receive Steve's "Quality At-Bats" CD and DVD. #EINATION Pre-registration is recommended: www.extrainnings-middleton.com or call 978-338-6031

When I first started working with Twins prospect Mitchell Kranson this off-season, he had a pretty good swing. But after our first round in the cage and sitting down and breaking down his swing and body movements, I identified some things that were both hindering his power and his batting average. Like so many young minor leaguers that come to me, he has survived on his upper body strength to put force into the ball and didn't use his body as well as he could be. Mitchell initial issues: Very wristy in his load (vs. activating his shoulders/elbows), didn't Hip Hinge well once he got to Launch Position and throughout his swing, and didn't get into his strongest Launch Position. By focusing on cleaning up the above things, since his initial assessment he has increased his exit velocity averages by 5-6mph, his maximum exit speed averages by 5-6mph and his average line drive distances by 40+ feet. Mitchell has great makeup mentally after this off-season he really understands his swing movements and how to find his way back to his best swing which makes me feel really confident that he'll be able to maintain his best swing throughout the year. Just like all hitters, he is a work in progress but I'm really excited to see what he does in his 2nd year in pro ball and expect to see his numbers across the board have big jumps.
