Q: Hi Larry I have an oldie 1993 Toyota 4 door sedan. I cannot figure out how to reach the wiring harness to get at the connector that I need to take the old wire from the rear door’s jamb switch. It looks likes it is solid metal around the cavity the switch sits in. How do I get to that wiring harness to change it?
A: Remove the pillar trim. In most cases there are no screws holding it in place. Pinch clips keep it all nice and neat. Once the pillar cover is off, the wire harness will be available.
Q: I listen to you guys on WBZ and you guys are brilliant, so I figured I would reach out to you.
My son has a 1994 Volvo 850 wagon, when it is in any gear except neutral, at a stop, the engine shakes and almost stalls but doesn’t. It is at its second mechanic, both are baffled, they have checked everything fuel related, egr valve, plugs, coils, main computer, motor mounts, idle, and air/vacuum leaks. None of these seem to be the problem. He is now leaning towards valve issue, waiting to hear on this. Have you guys any idea what may cause this. Between the 2 shops, the car has been gone for 2 1/2 months, each mechanic has worked on it in between other vehicles at their shops.

A: Glad you enjoyed the WBZ show. I would venture a trip to the transmission shop will resolve this issue. Most likely the torque converter is staying engaged. Compare it to a vehicle with a standard shift. You are at a stop light, vehicle in first gear. You put your foot on the brake, and start letting up the clutch. As you are coming up the vehicle engine is going to slow down and run rough. The same thing will happen with a torque converter that is not slipping properly. If the fluid is burnt, you may want to gamble on a transmission flush to repair the problem.
Q: I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu with 60,000 miles on it. My gas gauge dropped to empty. The mechanic tells me that the float in the gas tank has to be replaced at the cost of $1200. What I want to know is if there was ever a recall on this problem. Thankyou Don.
A: A search through my AllData repair subscription brings up Technical Service Bulletin #09-06-04-007A. This concerns the gas tank float getting stuck in position because the evap hose that runs next to the float gets caught against the float. This will stop the float from going up when you fill your tank. There is no guarantee that your float is stuck, however step one is to remove the sending unit and examine it for the aforementioned problem. This is a very expensive fuel pump assembly. However the estimate of $1200 Is a bit high. If your mechanic needs some guidance on this problem have him contact me at my email address listed below.
