Thinking about playing some #ParaIceHockey? Check out this great video from Kevin Rempel to learn about puck handling. What tips have you learned to help carry the puck like a pro?
When beginning playing sledge hockey many players struggle with carrying the puck. Pushing the puck the proper distance in front of you is key, but requires finesse and lots and lots of practice. If you haven’t seen my video on Fast Hands, be sure to look that up first. It will drastically help you in carrying the puck because you need to get good at moving your hands up and down the stick really fast. Practice pushing the puck a short distance in front of you that is far enough ahead that you can get a stride in - but not so far that you can’t reach it back into your hands and that an opponent can grab it away from you. I learned that if I practiced keeping one hand up and one hand down my sticks, that it allowed me to fully stick handle with one stick while focusing on my other hand for continuing my stride, and at the same time helping you accelerate. Key takeaways here are: - Practice pushing the puck the proper distance in front of you first - Then practice stick handling as you accelerate - Maintain control of the puck as you stop (can be done by digging your inside hand picks into the ice) - Practice playing with one hand up your stick, and with the other hand down. Do this several times, then switch hands with your opposite hand up/down. Next time I’ll be sure to give you some footage of a faster, game like pace. I forgot to here. Just been focusing first on the very basic fundamentals to get everyone started in the sport first. Cheers
