Some easy steps to getting your vegetable garden started...
Hey aspiring gardeners! It's 30 degrees outside but we need to get started now if you want a successful vegetable garden this summer. This week, you should consider starting tomatoes in-doors in seed trays. If you are feeling very ambitious, this is also the time to start onions. Some experienced gardeners will say it is too early to start tomatoes. I disagree. I like to have mature seedlings to transplant as soon as it is warm enough. As long as you have a sunny spot in your house, you can do it. And you will extend your tomato growing season!
1. Purchase a 3-part seed tray from Moorestown Hardware or another local home improvement store and a small bag of organic potting soil.
2. Sow your tomato seeds about 1/2 inch under the soil. Soak soil completely. Seeds germinate when water causes the seed to expand and crack open the seed coat.
3. Cover with the plastic dome that came with your kit and keep the tray in a WARM place. You can even hasten germination by putting the tray on a heating mat set on low. You don't need sunlight until the seedlings start popping up!
Need to order seeds? Moorestown Hardware and other stores will have a good selection. If you'd like to order online, I recommend Baker Creek Seeds.
