Play it safe and call a professional to remove animals from your chimney!

This month we are discussing the various animals that we have found in chimneys and how to remove and prevent future visits! Although rare, squirrels do occasionally find their way into chimneys, mostly by accident. They like to build their nests in high, secluded areas and exposed flues tops and b-vent caps seem like the perfect place to raise their young. This often leads to the squirrels accidentally falling down your chimney and, unfortunately, they won't be able to climb their way back out. If you hear any chittering, scratching, or rustling coming from your firebox, the best thing to do would be to keep the damper shut and call a professional to humanely remove and relocate the squirrel. At Hancock Chimney Service, we remove the squirrel and the mess that it has made and then perform a camera scan inspection to ensure that all of the debris is gone. A thorough cleaning and inspection is particularly important if the squirrel has chosen to nest in your b-vent. If a nest starts to plug the vent, carbon monoxide, a common byproduct of furnaces and water heaters, could leak back into the home. Want to learn more? Give our office a call at (616) 534-4228.
