Degen Berglund + dust + digging sets patient at ease
Frank O’Brien, clinical manager, Degen Berglund, demonstrated Love + Medicine when he went above and beyond to get to the bottom of a patient’s mysterious problem: Degen Berglund Respiratory received a call from a home patient complaining that her oxygen concentrator was spreading white dust all over her house. I quickly had the unit exchanged and assured her that we would have the bio technician check what was wrong. The diagnostic check came back negative for anything faulty with the concentrator. I called to inform her that our equipment checked out. She was anxious for an answer so I agreed to make a home visit to see how I could help. When I arrived there was white dust everywhere that she could not reach with a cleaning rag. I checked the furnace, basement and cold air returns but did not notice anything out of the ordinary. The concentrator again had white dust in the intake filter. I expressed my concern, but I was certain it was not our equipment. Later she called me again insisting that something be done as she was starting to get sick and not sleeping well from the dust. I agreed to come out again. This time I noticed there was even more white dust near the concentrator. I also noticed that she was having difficulty breathing and I could hear wheezing from breathing in the white dust. Not an ideal environment for someone with chronic lung disease. I noticed there was a humidifier next to the concentrator and bed. I asked her if she used tap (hard) water in the unit and she said yes. She was not using distilled water as required so when the water evaporated it was spreading calcium deposits—the white dust. After a few days she called back and wanted to apologize for being so grumpy but was desperate to find a solution. The best thing was she was feeling much better and could finally get some sleep. She expressed her gratitude for not giving up on her and helping when no one else would. To submit your story, go to
