At Dr. Dennehy’s office, we are focused on educating our patients how to best care for their teeth. Did you know that most of Oregon does not add fluoride to the drinking water? In fact, in state rankings, Oregon comes in 47th out of 50 states for percent of population covered by fluoridated water. Oregon also ranks 8th out of the 50 states for percent of population that has caries!
Fluoride helps protect your teeth! Teeth lose minerals daily; acids, plaque and bacteria strip away minerals, which can lead to tooth decay. What fluoride helps with, is replacing the minerals that are lost, such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphates. The more you can reduce tooth decay, the healthier your mouth is and the less likely you will see cavities develop.
Dr. Dennehy suggests making sure your child sees a dentist BEFORE their 1st birthday. Once the child’s first tooth erupts, it’s important that the teeth are exposed to fluoride for protection. Under the age of 2, fluoridated water (bottled) or supplemental tablets available from the pharmacy are best. Once your child turns 2, a fluoride toothpaste can be used in addition to the daily fluoride supplements.
Along with all of the daily options, your child can be treated with fluoride varnish to prevent cavities at the dental office.
