How we reduced the weight of the HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carriers by almost 390 tonnes: bit.ly/2tOvz2M

On June 27, 2017, history was made as the HMS Queen Elizabeth, the largest warship ever built for the UK Royal Navy, embarked on its first sea trials. We installed more than 4.1 km (2.5 miles) of Bondstrand® glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) pipework, consisting of 2,000 GRE pipe spools, along with specialist bulkhead penetrations and more than 1,314 m² (4,311 ft²) of phenolic FRP grating for the forward and aft islands and flight deck catwalks on this historic vessel. We also supplied the same solutions to the sister ship HMS Prince of Wales, which is currently under construction. Between the two vessels, our fiberglass solutions saved approximately 390 tonnes of weight when compared with metallic alternatives. Location, location, location. When we built a seawater and produced water treatment module for BW Offshore, the key location of our facility enabled them to easily transport the completed module just 31 miles to the FPSO integration yard in Singapore. The facility’s proximity to the integration yard minimized handling of the module, which allowed it to be installed directly onto the FPSO, reducing the burden of transporting such large capital equipment.
