Bring the whole family to Cumberland Mountain State Park the weekend of Aug. 20, 2017 to celebrate the once in a lifetime viewing of the solar eclipse. Twenty of Tennessee's state parks, including Cumberland Mountain, fall in or near the 'path of totality'. This is the first total solar eclipse to affect the continental U.S. since 1979, and to mark this historic event, the park is hosting special outdoor activities that include a variety of free and fee-based events all leading up to the eclipse viewing on Monday, Aug. 21. On Aug. 20, visitors can participate in a triathlon that includes a 200-yard pool swim, 7-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Registration for the triathlon is $60, and racers can register as individuals or in groups of two or three. A separate 5K race will be held the morning of Aug. 21 with a fee of $25 per person. Following the race on Monday will be a free solar eclipse viewing party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The party will feature live music, bounce houses for kids, food tents, guided hikes led by park rangers and more. The viewing party is free to attend, but guests can purchase a VIP package for $50 which includes special parking and seating and a food voucher. The event is supported by the City of Crossville and Cumberland Medical Center. For more information, call the Cumberland Mountain State Park at (931) 484-6138 or (800) 250-8618.
