We have Vinland Valley Plants in our garden center... but they have all the monarch babies in their Vinland Nursery!
Baby update: there are too many monarch cats to count. They seem to prefer the Asclepias speciosa to A. tuberosa, but their absolute favorite is definitely the A. verticillata (whorled milkweed).

Native Plants can be beautiful, beneficial, and wildlife depend on them. Join us for a workshop series for anyone who wants to learn more about gardening with native plants. All workshops will be held on Saturdays: 9:00 – 10:30 am KU Native Medicinal Plant Research Garden (KU NMPRG) 1865 E. 1600 Road, Lawrence, KS. Each workshop will focus on a different aspect of native plant gardening and will include hands-on work and a tour of the KU NMPRG so participants can observe specific plants throughout the growing season. The tour will be led each month by Roxie McGee, coordinator for the collaboration between Extension Master Gardeners and KU NMPRG.. An RSVP for each workshop is required and space is limited. Email GHF at grasslandheritage@gmaill.com for more information and to RSVP. Facebook RSVPs will not be considered. Workshop titles and presenters: • May 27th – “What to Plant Where.” Courtney Masterson, JCCC Adjunct Assistant Professor, KBS Research Assistant and owner of Native Lands, LLC, will talk about the basics of native plant gardening including choosing the right plant for your location, soil and sun requirements, and how to plant natives. GHF Land Preserve Manager Frank Norman will also talk about the connection between native plants in home gardens and their counterparts in the prairie ecosystem. • June 15th – “Landscape Design with Native Plants”. Landscape designer Ann Simpson will talk about important design considerations when using natives in home landscapes. Participants will also be invited to attend the Spring KU NMPRG Open House and tour the garden with Dr. Kelly Kindscher, Senior Scientist, Kanas Biological Survey. • August 19th – “Wildlife in the Garden.” Monarch Watch Communications Coordinator Angie Babbit will focus on pollinators and other wildlife that rely on native plants for food and habitat and participants will be look at specific plants (milkweed, for example) to better understand how wildlife interact with them. • Sept. 23rd – “Divide and Multiply”. Courtney Masterson returns to demonstrate how to prepare the garden for winter and how to divide plants and collect seeds in order to expand the garden.
