No Heat? You can check these five simple things before scheduling an appointment.
When it is cold out we all just want our heating system to work and be hassle free but sometimes Murphy’s Law sets in. The house starts to feel a little cold, you go up to the thermostat, turn the temperature up and nothing happens. You may feel nervous and frustrated but there a few simple things that you can try before calling in a service call. Check that the unit has power - there should be an emergency switch at the top of the stairs that leads to the basement or near the furnace. Check to make sure you have fuel. Either your oil tank, propane gauge or gas meter dial will spin if the gas is flowing to an appliance. Check the filter of the system. If the heating system has a dirty filter the unit cannot breathe and will shut down. Check your thermostat. If the thermostat has a blank screen there is a good chance that the batteries need to be replaced. Lastly, if your heating system vents directly outside (not through the chimney) you will want to check to make sure it is not covered over by leaves, snow or ice. If all of these things are checked and the heat is still not running you will need to place a service call. We have 24/7 emergency service so you will not be without heat. You can reach us anytime at 203-371-0055.
