Partners is dedicated to highlighting medical pioneers during African American History Month. Alexa Canady almost dropped out of her undergraduate University of Michigan program, attributing it to a crisis in self-confidence. Following working in a genetics lab the summer of her junior year, plus learning of a minority scholarship in medicine, she completed her undergraduate degree in zoology and continued on to graduate cum laude from the University of Michigan's medical school in 1975. Following her surgery internship at Yale-New Haven, Canady became the first female African-American neurosurgery resident in the United States. In 1981, she became the country's first female African-American neurosurgeon, focusing in pediatrics, working at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before moving to the Children's Hospital of Michigan. In 1984, Canady was the first female African American to be certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. After becoming director of neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital, she was also inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in 1989 and received the American Medical Women's Association President's Award in 1993. Canady also conducted research and taught at Wayne State University. In 2001, she retired and moved to Florida; however, upon learning there were no pediatric neurosurgeons in her area, she began to practice part-time at Pensacola's Sacred Heart Hospital.
