Down pines: split trunks, broken limbs, and uprooted. With their densely packed needles, pine trees collected significant (heavy!) snow during the recent storm in the PDX area and have been falling apart. These trees tend to have heavy limbs and wood, even without the added snow weight. Throughout the area, many urban pines tend to have multi-truck structures and grow at odd angles as they look for sunlight in their urban environment, which can make them weaker. Those that have been planted in poor locations, like berms, have a higher failure rate. These pines highlight that it is important to pick the right tree specimen for the right location -- and that all trees need to be maintained, like any other property investment. Have questions about smart tree selection and placement? Look over this informative document from the International Society of Arboriculture:

PDX Snowpocalypse 2017 has turned into tree-pocalypse 2017! Joel (Beaver VP) checked out area trees on foot last night and this afternoon. Many pine trees are giving way under the snow's weight. If you have tree issues, give Joel a call and he'll add you to the list. Our crew and equipment will be out as weather and road conditions safety permit. Stay safe and warm!

We've gotten a lot of calls in the past month from folks whose apple trees have overloaded with fruit to the point of breaking under their own weight. Out of the thousands of unwanted apples we've cleaned out of our clients' yards, we can only salvage so many to take home. But the unusable ones certainly don't go to waste -- they make a delightful summer treat for our friends at a neighborhood farm. That is one happy pile of goats!

Finding the tree through the branches! Deodar Cedars are unique. They are one of the few evergreens that need periodic thinning and end-weight reduction. This specific type of pruning helps prevent dangerous breakage and helps eliminate heavy branches from rubbing together and creating potential wounds. With this recent Deodar, overgrown and broken branches filled the tree. Time for pruning! Here are the before-and-after photos. (On the 4th photo, look close and you'll see our arborist working from the bucket truck on the lower right. Too many branches!)
