Freezing rain/drizzle has developed across southern Missouri this morning and should expand north throughout the day. Hazardous travel conditions are possible for areas south of Highway 36 today, particularly during the evening commute. While we have trended ice totals back slightly through Sunday, the same impacts previously mentioned remain possible as a little ice goes a long way. We will provide updates here throughout the weekend to ensure you're kept up to date on the latest as the event unfolds.

The weather today looks quiet with highs in the low to mid 40s. However, this holiday weekend there will be a couple, possible weather threats. The first will come on Friday morning when there will be the chance for a light wintry mix in the form of freezing drizzle and/or light snow north of Interstate 70. This may lead to slick roads. However, by Friday afternoon, temperatures will warm above freezing with just drizzle or light rain possible. On Christmas, a very strong storm system will move through the area. Storms may be capable of damaging winds across eastern Kansas and extreme western Missouri. Lastly, tonight is the last of 7 consecutive midnight shifts for my co-worker and myself and we are the fortunate beneficiaries of getting the holiday weekend off (weather permitting). So, we would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone out there a Happy Holiday!

On Friday, we'll see the beginnings of the next winter storm system. Freezing drizzle is expected to begin late Friday morning for areas over northern Missouri, with drizzle further south. Freezing drizzle will later impact all areas overnight Friday and will then transition to light snow Saturday morning. Minor accumulations are expected with this activity. The greater concern will be with dangerously cold temperatures Sunday morning as wind chill values approach -10 to -25 degrees across the area.

Get ready for some cold weather... Temperatures will fall through the afternoon following the passage of a cold front this morning. High pressure will build south this evening which will allow for clearing skies and weakening winds; optimal conditions for strong radiational cooling. As a result temperatures early Thursday morning will dip into the lower to middle 30s across much of the area. Freeze and frost statements now in effect for Thursday morning.
