Ice, Ice, Baby... Summer is in full swing and air conditioners everywhere are working hard to keep the masses cool and comfortable. If you have had your a/c unit regularly serviced and maintained, chances are slim that you will have a problem. If not, at some point, you may see "ice, ice, baby" on your a/c unit or experience a frozen system. The first thing you should do to protect your system is SHUT IT OFF COMPLETELY and LEAVE IT OFF!! A system that continues to operate with frozen coils runs the risk of damaging the compressor or the entire a/c unit beyond repair. It is important to note that a technician cannot service a unit that is frozen and it can take up to 24-48 hours to completely thaw depending on the severity. To save yourself the cost of a service call, wait a minimum of 24 hours after the system has been shut off before calling to schedule an appointment. Also, make a note as to day/time you shut the unit off. This is helpful for the scheduler and technician to determine if the system is ready for inspection. The following examples are common signs of a freeze up: 1-The room(s) are too warm when the a/c is running 2-There is warm air or NO air coming from the supply registers 3-Water on floor around the furnace 4-Ice on the outside coolant lines extending from the condensing unit to the building
