The Blackwell Estate was built in 1904 by Frederick Blackwell for his son, Russell and wife Pauline, across the street from his own home on Sherman Ave. The Blackwell's had a business empire, consisting of the Coeur d'Alene and Spokane Electric Railroad and Blackwell Motor Co.
Between 1900 and 1905 four large homes were built within a block of Frederick Blackwell's home at 817 Sherman. The original owners of these homes played an important part in the history of Coeur d'Alene. This section of Sherman Avenue became known as pioneer row.
