Debra Bates-Lamborn was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky and was raised on military bases throughout the world. With a Bachelor of Science in Photojournalism from the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas, she worked as an award-winning photojournalist for United Press International, Associated Press, and several newspapers and magazines for more than a decade. Debra was one of six photographers featured in “Soldiers Magazine” for their international competition of “A day in the life of the Military” in which she showcased life at Fort Leavenworth.
She left the newspaper business when she bought her building at 406 Shawnee. It was within inches from being destroyed by a wrecking ball but she personally worked on the building to bring it back to life. Twenty years later, First City Photo and Frames has made its niche in the Leavenworth-Kansas City area. People return to her studio year after year for wedding, baby and family photos. Some have traveled from as far away as Brazil to update their family portrait, while others have made the overland journey from Kentucky just to have her photograph their daughter for her high school senior photos. The quality of the work, the “fun” of the photo session, keeps them coming back for more.
What other people are say about Debra:
“Debra has been photographing my family for years. We were stationed at Ft. Leavenworth in 2002 and that’s when it all started. Since then we have moved all around the country and still I always make sure that Debra is the one that captures all the special moments in my family’s lives.” Shannon Blocker, Louisville, Kentucky
“Best quality pictures and most professional photographer you'll find anywhere! My family has gone to First City Photos (I'm pretty sure) since she started her studio. She has been there for every milestone in my family, and when we moved to Illinois, we made the long trek back to have our newborn pictures taken by her. I treasure all my photos! Kate Peltzer, Pekin, Illinois
“Thanks so much, Debra! You are about as speedy producing this as you were taking the pictures. I bet there were some doozies of bloopers. We had a good time too! And it is because you make it fun. You are GOOD! We sincerely appreciate your doing this for us.” Virginia Rawlings, President of the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce
