Spiceland Friends Church is a Quaker (Friends) congregation - a community of wonderful people who are seeking to follow God's direction for their lives. We believe that each person is a minister and has a ministry. We believe that others are called to assist when the ministry is too big for one person to handle. We believe that together we seek God's direction and the group approves new ideas, new ministries, and new ways to develop God's work among us. It is not a perfect process and there are bumps along the way as we seek to discern the best way forward. We are not perfect people - we have our own shortcomings, sins, and failures - but we are seeking God's strength, forgiveness, and courage to do better and to be more in tune with his direction and calling for our lives.
We cannot see what is up ahead, but we trust God to guide us and speak to us. Every Sunday we come together so we can listen to God, search the scripture, support each other, contribute to various outreach ministries, encourage others, and be encouraged. During the week, we try to live as representatives of Jesus in everything we do and say.
A Brief History
Members of the Religious Society of Friends - many originally from North Carolina - gathered for their first worship meeting in 1824 under the trees. The first meetinghouse was erected in 1828 and was constructed of logs.
In 1833, a frame, one-story meetinghouse replaced the log structure and had separate entrances for men and women (as was the custom for Friends at the time).
Today's Italianate brick meetinghouse was built in 1874 and had no partition to separate the men and women. The building's long windows and elaborate brickwork were carried through in the 1968-69 addition, connected to the west side of the meetinghouse. In 2005-2006, the meetinghouse was again enlarged with the addition of a new Welcome Center, Family Center (large multi-purpose room), classrooms, and offices. The many beautiful stained glass windows were added in 1929. Particularly beautiful is the large stained glass window depicting Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
