Chartered March 25, 1938 with 32 members, the Belle Glade Chamber of Commerce now celebrates 75 years of serving the community with over 200 members.
Scullen was the first president of the Chamber, and a board of directors was chosen. The board felt it was important to have a bank in town. Other goals were to entice a canning factory to the area and the opening of Road 25 to West Palm Beach.
In their first few months of operation they were successful in getting a road from Pahokee to South Bay. They worked on getting a bond issue to secure a new city hall, incinerator, storm drainage and needed streets.
Today, the Chamber is over 250 members strong and continues to support local businesses and economic development of the Lake region.
