Theatre for a New Audience is the only American theatre to be invited not once, but twice to bring our productions of Shakespeare to Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company. Jeffrey Horowitz founded Theatre for a New Audience in 1979. We have grown from a touring Shakespeare company to a nationally and internationally recognized classical theatre.

Theatre for a New Audience attracts some of today’s finest directors from, the acclaimed like Julie Taymor (The Lion King), Sir Peter Hall (Troilus and Cressida), Doug Hughes (Doubt), Bartlett Sher (South Pacific), Darko Tresnjak (The Merchant of Venice), Robert Woodruff (Saved) and Evan Yionoulis (Ohio State Murders); to the up-and-coming. They collaborate with superb set and costume designers like John Lee Beatty and Linda Cho, as well as composers such as Academy Award-winner Elliot Goldenthal. Some of the finest American actors like F. Murray Abraham, Kathleen Chalfant, Kate Forbes, LisaGay Hamilton, Byron Jennings, Harry Lennix, Amy Ryan, Stephen Spinella, and John Turturro play characters like Shylock, Portia, and Don Juan on our stages.

Theatre for a New Audience supports artists at all stages of their careers. Cicely Berry , Director of Voice, Royal Shakespeare Company and Juilliard voice and text coach Robert Neff Williams conduct free workshops on playing Shakespeare and the classics.

We play for wide-ranging audiences, from connoisseurs of diverse repertory to kids seeing groundbreaking productions for the first time.
