We were finding that kids were having a hard time understanding what happens in the martial arts - how it was far more than just kicking and punching. So we wrote a book titled 'Tiger's Great Journey' that told the story of a boy named Tiger who had seen other kids being bullied and it left him feeling scared, powerless and a little angry and wanting to do something about it. He came into our school and after talking with one of our instructors decided to become a Black Belt, and then he had a dream. In his dream he met a famous karate master - Gichin Funakoshi - who encouraged him to climb to the top of Ryoku Mountain and take his Black Belt test in the Temple of the Clouds. But it was not an easy journey, the challenges that Tiger faced transformed him from a scared, powerless and angry boy into a confident, powerful and calm young man who had developed the noble traits of courage, courtesy, integrity, humility, and self control. So, when it came time to take his Black Belt test he passed with flying colors. This story is a metaphor describing the transformational process that our students go through as they progress from White Belt to Black Belt. It's not easy but well worth the effort. We hope you'll join us. Marty Callahan, Chief Instructor
