The Safety Council of Greater St. Louis began in 1916 as a small Safety First Committee of the Business Men’s League. The committee’s purpose was to promote industrial accident prevention. Until 1918, the Council operated as a part of the Chamber of Commerce—with no budget. The Safety Council separated from the Chamber of Commerce in 1918 and devoted itself to traffic and industrial issues. By 1920, the Council expanded its work to include home, school, and substance abuse programs. In 2014, the Safety Council became a registered training center for the National Safety Council.
