Franklin County

In 2013, the Southern TN Christian Medical and Dental Association began to cast a vision for a community health day that would allow us as healthcare professionals to donate our time and services in an effort to glorify God and serve the community. As the planning for the event commenced, it soon became clear that perhaps the original vision was too small. After discussing the idea with several local church and civic leaders, the Franklin County One Day Community Outreach event was birthed.

The purpose of One Day is simple: we seek to share Christ with the people of Franklin County and show his love by providing the most basic needs of food, clothing, and healthcare. Our desire is that God’s people would set aside differences of denomination, race, politics, and socio-economic status to unite for the cause of living out the Gospel right here at home.

As we begin to prepare for the 2nd Annual Franklin County One Day Community Outreach scheduled for May 16, 2015, Christian Medical Dental Association of Southern Tennessee would like to say thank you to all who participated and give glory to God for all that He accomplished. Eight short months ago, CMDA of Southern TN had a vision to share the love of Christ with Franklin County by hosting a free health care day. We never imagined what would transpire. By the grace of God, what began as just an idea turned into something far greater; numerous churches, individuals, non-profit organizations, businesses, and municipal agencies joined together to volunteer their resources to help meet the physical and spiritual needs of our neighbors during the first annual One Day Community Outreach Event. Despite the bad weather, the event was an overwhelming success. We’d like to take this opportunity to give an update of what was accomplished:

•The dental team provided over 200 screenings and 175 of those individuals received treatment. This included 356 extractions. Donated dental services totaled $84,000.

•The medical team performed exams for approximately 100 people. 70 individuals had blood work performed at no charge by Pathgroup ($75 worth of lab/person to equal $5,250 of free blood work). In addition, 30 chiropractic treatments were done.

•The clothing team collected, sorted, and organized an entire gym full of clothes. 143 people utilized the clothing services taking 80% of what was collected. The remaining 20% was distributed to local charities.

•450 copies of the scriptures were distributed by the Gideons International.

•Over 50 free haircuts were given away

•87 eye exams were performed by the Lions Club and many of those examined have receive needed glasses free of charge.

•The food team gave away 265 boxes of groceries to those needing food. The 135 boxes that remained were donated to local charities.

•Local churches provided food and drinks on site for participants and volunteers. Approximately 800 hot dogs were served and chips were provided by Frito-Lay.

•Children that were present at the event were treated to a variety of fun and games including a magic show and bounce houses.

•Entertainment was provided throughout the day by a variety of amazingly talented musicians, bands, choirs, and vocalists.

•The prayer team was able to share words of comfort, hope, and encouragement with many of the participants at the event.

•Numerous local non-profit organizations were present to give information about the services that they are providing 365 days a year in our community.

We are deeply grateful to each and every person that contributed their time, money, and efforts to make this event a reality. Armed with the things we’ve learned this year, we are excited to make next year’s One Day even better.

I hope you’ll prayerfully consider partnering with us again to share the love of Christ with our community. Please mark your calendar to be at our first kickoff meeting on Tuesday August 19, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Franklin County Annex Community Room so that we can begin preparing to make 2015 even better!

“We love because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19
