In 1972 the state of Wisconsin began the process of deinstitutionalization. 1,800 individuals with developmental disabilities were discharged from state centers and returned to live in a ‘least restrictive environment’ in their home communities. Outagamie County set up a committee to determine the best means to serve the specialized needs of these individuals. Agape of Appleton was established in March, 1974 to meet that need.
Between 1974 and 1975, Agape established the Oneida and Harris Street group homes, with the support of Outagamie Chapter of ARC and the dedication of Agape’s Board of Directors. In 1977 Agape began the transitional apartment program for group home participants ready to proceed to a more independent living situations.
Agape continues to grow to this day. As of 2013, Agape consists of 11 group and adult family homes, one treatment foster home and 6 divisions of the apartment program. Our programs serve children and adults.
Agape has made a number of changes and advances in the course of 39 years of growth. These changes have aided in the quality of support Agape can provide and concurrently the quality of life individuals we support can now enjoy. One thing that has not changed in all that time is Agape’s continuing mission and philosophy:
…to provide quality, individualized community-based support for individuals. Its philosophy is that all people are viewed as individuals and treated with dignity and respect….
