Passing time in between haircuts, HB happened to read an article in a magazine about a process that used evaporated water to cool surrounding air. In his spare time HB designed and constructed an evaporative cooling unit and promptly installed it in the barber shop. HB pitched his new product to local merchants, and, in the spring of 1937, the first commercial installations were performed.
