The City of Blue Island was settled in 1835, making it one of the oldest communities in Chicagoland. It sits at the southern edge of a glacial ridge, which is where the uniquely-monikered city derived it’s name – its elevation and resulting surrounding azure-hazed fog made the community appear as if an island in a blue sea when viewed from a distance.
Today, the City of Blue Island is known for its historic neighborhood charm, blended business and recreational downtown district, comprehensive community and business development initiatives, and active, diverse and creative residents who enjoy a multitude of events, and festivals year-round.
