The Conservation Society of San Antonio, recipient of the prestigious National Trust for Historic Preservation-Louise DuPont Crowninshield Award and the Texas Historical Commission Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation, is one of the oldest and most active community preservation groups in the United States. Since 1924, the Society has dedicated itself to the preservation of Texas history. The Society’s efforts in safe-guarding treasures such as the Spanish Colonial missions, the Southwest School of Art and Craft, and the Jose Antonio Navarro complex, are key to San Antonio’s popularity as a visitor destination. From 13 founding women to a current membership of over 2,500 men and women, the Society concentrates on historic preservation, youth education on Texas heritage, and community activism in the strategic development of the city of San Antonio and the surrounding area.
