Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center (SEKMHC) serves six counties in the southeast area of the State, an agricultural and light manufacturing area. There are three cities with a population greater than 5,000, Iola, Allen County, location of the Administrative Office, Chanute, Neosho County; and Fort Scott, Bourbon County. The area has three major roads, Highway 54, runs east/west through the center, Highway 169 runs north/south on the west; Highway 69 runs north/south on the east. The Neosho River runs through the east.
From Iola, there are four urban areas that are approximately equal driving distrance of two hours: Kansas City, Joplin, Missouri, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Wichita.
