JSR Associates, Inc. is a senior living consulting firm founded in 1996 by Jane Rohde, Principal. At that time it was clear that there was a gap between senior living operations, resident care models, and the built environment. JSR has sought to fill that gap for clients, who include non-profit and for-profit providers, developers, and government agencies. JSR’s strengths lie in strategic master planning, creative care modeling, focus groups, sustainable building practices, programming based upon workshops with integrated teams, and appropriate design for seniors, families, and staff. We find that workshops at the beginning of the concept phase allow all options and ideas to be reviewed and examined as the design develops. This process is what creates a physical environment that supports operations and care models including nursing needs, environmental services needs, food service requirements, and effective operational circulation. For example, JSR has provided successful workshops for The City of Boulder City, Nevada; The Commission on Aging in Baltimore, Maryland; Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral, Florida; Brooke Grove Retirement Village in Sandy Spring, Maryland; and Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

As a project continues through the design phase toward construction, JSR guides design decisions through research (evidence based design), knowledge of end users and physiology, care modeling, and maintaining the initial goals for residents, family, and staff. JSR’s design decisions are also guided by the verification of sustainable building initiatives, application of ADA codes, and confirmation that the built environment continues to support operations during construction.

JSR Associates, Inc. provides architectural, interior design, and FF&E turnkey procurement services for senior living projects, which range from independent living to extended care and hospice. The integration of all systems (lighting sensors, security, telecommunication and data, cable, nurse call, and HVAC controls) is an essential part of a successful design. The coordination of systems combined with the selection of appropriate finishes and furnishings complete JSR’s approach towards a design that provides a residentially scaled and home-like feel for a hospice and extended care setting. Recent projects include The Lenox on the Lake, in Lauderhill, Florida; the renovation of The Lynmoore in Richmond, Virginia; and the renovation of The Lynmoore St. Lucie in Ft. Pierce, Florida; all of which provide assisted living settings that include memory care and end-time care.

The firm also provides educational seminars on culture change, design, and care modeling for senior living projects nationwide and has produced a DVD titled, “A Day in the Life of Joe: Impact of Design on the Older Person.” This program was presented live throughout the US and in Seoul, Korea, in conjunction with Yonsei University. Additional educational seminars on senior living, aging in place, and healthcare research have been presented at the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) National Convention, NeoCon, Healthcare Design, American Society of Healthcare Engineers’ (ASHE) Planning and Design Conference, American Institute of Architects’ National Convention, as well as other regional and local venues.
