It was known as the Alliance Manufacturing Company when it first produced the first radio-controlled residential garage door opener in May 1954 and calling it “Genie.” The opener became the company’s principle product in less than a year, and the industry’s first mass-produced garage door opener propelled the company into technological market leadership. In the years following, Genie engineering developed many innovations, starting with the original direct drive screw rail in October 1958.

In 1993, Genie produced the industry leading Safe-T-Beam infrared sensors for garage door openers, which sense objects in the door's path to prevent entrapment, a literal life-saver for many who have used automatic garage doors over the years. That invention was followed in 1995 by the Intellicode® remote access security system that automatically changes the security code to one of billions of combinations each time the transmitter is activated. As code grabbing thieves found ways to steal remote codes to open garage doors, Genie led the way to help thwart their actions.

In 2000 Genie developed the Excelerator® opener, which satisfied a growing preference for speed. That eventually led to the 2009 launch of the 140V DC motor units that deliver up to 12” per second of opening speed, the fastest on the market. Other leading innovations include 24V DC motors, belt drive rail design, and optical dual encoders.
Because of these innovations, the Genie name has become a symbol of trust and reliability for millions of customers throughout the United States and Canada who request the brand from professional dealers. Its continuing focus on product quality, service, and innovation in safety, security, and convenience is still the hallmark of the Genie legacy.

Today, Genie produces remote-controlled garage door opener systems and accessories for everyone from the tech-savvy residential customer to those who just want the basic “open and close” garage door opener. Smart Openers, which feature Genie’s award-winning Aladdin Connect® system, allow homeowners to remotely control and monitor their garage doors.
