Today marks 47 years since the first American Lutheran woman was ordained as a pastor. The Rev. Elizabeth Platz, was ordained Nov. 22, 1970, by the Lutheran Church in America, one of the ELCA's predecessor church bodies. One month later, the Rev. Barbara Andrews was ordained by the American Lutheran Church, another predecessor church of the ELCA. We give thanks for these leaders who paved the way for all who are called to rostered ministry in our church!

Congress is moving extremely rapidly to pass a massive tax bill that would have enormous implications for the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, the future of critical federal human needs programs, and millions of individuals and families across the country. Additionally, the bill could cap the deduction for state property taxes, forcing cuts to state and local programs like education, public safety, and infrastructure. The bottom line is that there is nothing in this bill that assists or protects people living in poverty. Your action is needed now! Join Sr. Simone Campbell, Executive Director of NETWORK, Rev. Dr. Leslie Copeland-Tune, Director of the Ecumenical Poverty Initiative and Ecumenical Advocacy Days, and Diane Randall, Executive Secretary of the Friends Committee on National Legislation for a policy briefing on what is happening with the tax bill in the House and Senate and learn about what you can do!
