The history of Schmidt Associates is as fun and colorful as the people who manage the firm. After all, who wouldn’t want to work with an ever-cheerful man who wears a distinctive red hat, a guy who rides a Harley in his spare time, and a woman whose now husband once received an offer to trade her for camels in Egypt? (The offer was rejected.)
These creative yet practical people lead a firm that opened on the nation’s bicentennial, July 4, 1976, and was founded on the principle of Servant Leadership. That core value shapes the firm’s extensive community service and teaches them to put the client first, to walk in the Owner’s shoes. That’s why buildings designed or renovated by Schmidt Associates reflect the goals and cultures of the client’s organizations – not the architect’s.
Being engaged in their work and having fun while they’re at it leads them to create engaging spaces where people are inspired to be and do their best.
Schmidt Associates has grown to approximately 100 people. They occupy two historic downtown buildings that span a flatiron-shaped downtown block between Vermont Street and trendy Massachusetts Avenue.
