Melissa Woodgate, an environmental program specialist with our spill response team in Valdez, presents on DEC's major objectives in a response, during this morning's community training seminar hosted by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company in Valdez.

In Tennessee, two outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H7N9 have been confirmed by USDA among domestic chickens. Poultry farms in Alabama and Tennessee have also identified avian influenza in some stocks. These farms have been quarantined and are working with USDA to eradicate the influenza virus. While there are currently no confirmed cases of avian influenza in Alaska, there is potential for the virus to be carried by migratory waterfowl. Last year, there were cases of LPAI H5N2 detected in wild waterfowl in Alaska. At this time however, the CDC considers the health risk to the public to be minimal. The Office of the State Veterinarian will continue performing routine surveillance testing of domestic birds at farms and agricultural fairs and will work with other state, federal, and tribal organizations to coordinate the testing of live and hunter-harvested wild birds. This will ensure that any potential outbreaks can be identified quickly and contained. Here's what you can do to help prevent an avian influenza outbreak in Alaska: ● Avoid contact with sick or dead birds. ● Avoid contact with surfaces that appear to be contaminated with feces from birds. ● Protect domestic birds, their food, and living spaces from contact with wild birds; clean and disinfect cages regularly. ● Wash your hands thoroughly after handling any birds or cage materials. ● Ensure eggs and poultry meat intended for eating are cooked appropriately (meat should reach an internal temperature of 165°F). ● Hunters should use precautions consistent with safe handling and cleaning of game, including thorough hand washing and cooking practices. ● If you encounter 5 or more birds that appear sick (swollen head, nasal discharge), are acting abnormally (circling, uncoordinated, depressed), or are dead, contact the Office of the State Veterinarian at (907) 375-8215 immediately. For more information on avian influenza, please visit the Office of the State Veterinarian website:
