Programs to Educate All Cyclists
Summer Program.
Our seven-week summer program provides all students, no matter their disability, with the opportunity to learn how to cycle. Examples of student goals include: participating in a community bike ride with peers, learning to balance and ride a two-wheel bike, participating in a tandem bike ride through the community, and maintaining endurance on a tricycle. PEAC is committed to providing quality instruction, and creating environments where all students can learn and have fun. PEAC staff, students, and families regularly participate in cycling events. Some of our favorite rides include: the MGST, One Helluva Ride, Ability Tour, Tour de Troit, Peach of a Ride, and our own Celebration of Cycling.
Active Transportation Program.
The Active Transportation Initiative is PEAC’s newest project. Beginning in the spring of 2011, this ground-breaking program aims to foster independence and spontaneity among students with disabilities by providing targeted pedestrian, cycling, and public transit training at 3 schools in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.
Advocacy.
Our participants and staff consistently advocate for safer and more accessible roads for all users. In 2010, 3 of our students spoke before the Michigan Senate Transportation Committee and were an integral part in passing Michigan’s Complete Streets legislation. These three students were named Advocates of the Year by the League of Michigan Bicyclists.
