The first Bishop of Memphis was the Most Reverend Carroll T. Dozier who took the reigns of the Diocese in 1971. He developed the Diocese by attracting clergy and religious to the area to teach, preach and care for the needs of others. Bishop Dozier served until 1982 and was followed by the Most Reverend J. Francis Stafford. Bishop Stafford is credited with expanding the Diaconate program, the Catholic schools system and increasing services to refugees. He served until 1986 and was followed by the Most Reverend Daniel Buechlein, OSB. Bishop Buechlein strengthened Catholic schools and left a strong administrative structure in place to guide the diocese. In 1993, the Most Reverend J. Terry Steib, SVD, was named Bishop of Memphis. He was known for a caring and personable approach toward those under his direction. As the first African American bishop in our Diocese, he is able to bring people of various backgrounds together to further Christian unity. On October 19, 2016, the Most Reverend Martin D. Holley, , became the fifth bishop of Memphis. Bishop Holley calls Catholics to fulfill the corporal works of mercy. He encourages the faithful to grow in personal piety and devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus.
