Barnes & Noble with Hope Jahren and 10 others.
This afternoon we here at B&N proudly presented 2016’s Discover Great New Writers Award prizes to six unique Finalists: a total of $105,000 to the deserving authors. “America will always be better tomorrow if we reckon with who we are today,” said presenter Brando Skyhorse of 3rd Place for Nonfiction, Patrick Phillips’ “Blood at the Root: A Racial Cleansing in America”. “A bookstore is like a library,” said Hope Jahren on receiving 2nd Place, Nonfiction for her memoir “Lab Girl”: “Except you can have the stuff that’s in there, tear out pages, and give them to a friend.” “This is something fixable,” proclaimed Nonfiction Discover Award winner Matthew Desmond (“Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City”): “We don’t need to outsmart poverty. We need to hate it more.” “Without them, I’d probably be running a not-for-profit somewhere,” said Jung Yun (“Shelter”) of her team at her publisher Picador upon receiving our 3rd Place prize for Fiction. “I never get nervous,” said author Emma Straub in presenting Yaa Gyasi’s “Homegoing” 2nd Place for Fiction: “My envelope is secretly empty, so I’m not even worried about that,” alluding to Sunday’s fireworks at this year’s Academy Awards. “Homegoing’ made me hunger for more: great books are a salve and a push.” “This book will give you papercuts from turning the pages so quickly,” said author and Discover judge Benjamin Percy of Fiction winner Abby Geni’s “The Lightkeepers” upon receiving her prize. These are but touching footnotes in a year of great reading and great insight from our hard-working Discover team, who comb through hundreds of books annually to find six exceptional Finalists. Our congratulations to our prize recipients, and to the wealth of readers who can now go forth and Discover these phenomenal books for themselves. #BNDiscover
