A Good Day to Make Things Better!!! BigDoG2017 #bdog2017 When -- The 2017 Big Day of Giving is on THURSDAY May 4th from 12:01am - 11:59pm. What -- BIG DoG is a 24 hour period every year when Americans take a day to celebrate the spirit of giving. Donors are able to learn more about the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet and other local non-profits, and to support us on a day when their donation will be supplemented by dozens of corporations, businesses, foundations, and civic organizations. BIG DoG is a very important day for Food Closet fundraising. How - There are 2 ways to donate to the AIFC on the BIG day of Giving: BEFORE the Big Day of Giving -- If donating online is not for you, please write a check to the AIFC and put "BIG DoG" in the notes section. Kindly mail your check to AIFC, PO Box 132, Auburn CA 95604. You do not need to wait for the BIG Day of Giving; you can mail your check today. ON the Big Day of Giving -- Go to between 12:01am and 11:59pm on Thursday, May 4th, 2017. Type into the box: Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, then follow the instructions. Your online donations will be supplemented with bonus funds from local companies and foundations Why -- Your tax-deductible donation to the AIFC helps us to provide nutritious food to local individuals and families who do not have sufficient resources. Your support will help us fight food insecurity in Auburn. Thank you very much for "Sharing the Blessings" with your generous donation to the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet. Who -- BIG DoG is a nationwide event. In the Sacramento Region it is organized and hosted by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and the Placer Community Foundation.

Leek and Lentil Soup Recipe adapted from Provided by the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet SERVES: 6 PREP TIME: 20 minutes COOK TIME: 1 hour 10 minutes INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 3 leeks, well washed*, and chopped (white & light green part) • 1 small onion, chopped (~ 3/4 cup) • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1 small carrot, chopped • 1 1/2 cups lentils • 1 bay leaf (optional) • 8 cups (64 oz.) chicken broth • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon salt, to taste • 1/2 teaspoon pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS 1 Rinse the lentils, and leave to stand in water while preparing the rest of the vegetables. 2 Thoroughly rinse the leeks until water is clear. 3 In a large soup pot, on medium heat, add oil and sauté leeks, onions, garlic and carrot on medium heat, until soft. 4 Drain lentils, and add them to the pot. Add the bay leaf (optional), broth, and thyme, and bring to the boil. 5 Simmer, covered, on medium-low heat for an hour, or until lentils are soft. 6 Remove the bay leaf. Purée approximately 3 cups of soup, and stir back into the pot. For creamier texture, purée more of the soup. Add salt and pepper to taste. 28th Annual Music for Humanity concert Pioneer United Methodist Church presents the 28th Annual Music for Humanity concert where five outstanding groups of musicians will share their talents: Auburn’s premiere Colla Voce Chamber Singers, directed by Janine Dexter, will perform a sampling of their favorite songs. The Heavy Metal Tuba Quartet will be adding some low notes to the concert with interesting comments about their varied selections by George Preston. Guitarist John Massey will use his unique finger style of performing solo guitar music. He plays with many bands throughout the Sacramento Valley. The Pioneer Chancel Choir will sing a humorous song, appropriate for the season—You won’t want to miss it. Dr. Bach & the Jazz Practitioners will be back this year! His toe tapping music will send everyone marching out with the Saints! Who -- Pioneer United Methodist Church is the oldest church in Auburn. It is one the original four founding congregations that opened the Auburn Interfaith Food Closet in 1998.
