This weekend in Grayling: The Spike's Challenge Paddlers Tribute Race the final warm-up race before the AuSable River Canoe Marathon! "Annual Paddler’s Tribute C-2 Event To Be Held On Sunday Morning As Part Of Weekend Of Canoe Racing", from the Crawford County Avalanche, by Caleb Casey, Managing Editor: "Last year’s Spike’s Challenge C-2 Paddler’s Tribute race featured a record field and a one-second difference between the top two teams at the finish line. It was the event’s 25th anniversary. "Can this year’s C-2 event possibly top last year’s? Event organizers are not expecting as many teams this time around. 'I’m thinking we should be around 75 teams this year,' said Cheryl Lucey, one of the organizers for the Spike’s Challenge." With the noon-Monday final entry-registration deadline approaching, there have been two changes in the entry list since we posted the last update here on July 5th: One addition and one withdrawal. Tim Chapple, 43, of Interlochen, Michigan, has teamed with Vincent Bellmaire, 25, of Shawinigan, Quebec. By coincidence, Tim teamed up with another Quebecois partner close to the entry deadline in 2016; Tim and Gabriel LaRose finished 29th. Tim, who will gain his "Iron Paddler" designation (10 or more finishes) upon completing the race, will be joined in the Marathon by his Dad, Lauren, 70, also of Interlochen, Michigan. Lauren, who is teamed with Greg Zophy, 60, of St. Paul, Minnesota, is looking for his first Marathon finish; Greg has 4 Marathon finishes to his credit. One addition, one withdrawal - we stand at 80 teams entered. We will post another update of the full entry list following Monday's final deadline. The 1997 AuSable River Canoe Marathon on the Gillette World Sports Special. An oldie but goodie. Quebec's Serge Corbin and Michigan's Jeff Kolka were the Champs, in 14:19:36 (14 hours, 19 minutes, 36 seconds). Saskatchewan's Mike Vincent and Minnesota's Al Rudquist were second, 6 minutes, 18 seconds behind the winners. In 2016, Mike Vincent finished 10th with partner Graham Smith of British Columbia.
