Attention Parents and Grandparents! Our church is putting on a week of Vacation Bible School this June 4-8 from 4:30-7pm. Beautiful words from our Senior Pastor and leader, Michele Kaminsky: "As many of you know, the United Methodist Church received a complaint about the election of an openly gay Bishop. The complaint was reviewed by the Judicial Council. They determined she remains a Bishop, but that electing openly gay clergy and bishops is illegal. I am full of joy that Bishop Karen Oliveto remains our Bishop. She is an amazing, holy woman whose leadership is very much needed. But I am saddened that our denomination continues to exclude LGBTQI clergy. These words below are from a colleague of mine, tweaked only slightly to fit me, and I've added the scripture: "I believe that every person is made in the image of God, created by love and for love. I do not believe that specific body parts, chromosomes, or intimate acts determine whether a relationship honors God, but rather the qualities of being consenting, caring, mutually affirming, truthful, [loving] and life-giving [do]. I believe that Jesus broke rules and reinterpreted tradition in ways that drew the circle of blessing wider than religious and political authorities of the time wanted it to be. And I believe that we - as individuals and as a church - are called to look for the fruit of the Spirit as evidence for God's presence and work in our midst. Those fruit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness (some translate generosity), faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. So in spite of today's headlines about my denomination, I stand with my LGBTQIA siblings, colleagues, friends, and neighbors, affirming your full humanity, your right to be in loving, committed relationships, and your calling to serve God, the world, and the church in diverse ways, including every form of ordained ministry. You are beautiful, beloved, blessed, and whole. I pray you never doubt that. And I pray the UMC will affirm it, too, sooner rather than later." The hurt and pain churches cause my LGBTQI brothers and sisters is tragic and my heart aches. But know this, you are loved and whole and perfect and you don't have to change. Remember Psalm 139:14 - "I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well." (New Century Version) God made us all beautiful! Let us celebrate that our Bishop is still our Bishop, and let's come together in love for the continued work ahead. For the work we do now I know someone in the future will say, "Thank God they stayed the course so I could be who I am," because I say this all the time for the women and men who worked together so that women could be ordained. If they hadn't, I would not be serving Applewood Valley United Methodist Church today. And I am so blessed to do so! Our church is filled with the love of God!"
