-What is a Cooperative?
A cooperative is a business that is owned and operated by the people who use it. The owners are also the customers. A cooperative may be any kind of business - a utility, an insurance company, or a farm supply store such as Poudre Valley Coop. Poudre Valley Coop follows four basic principals of operation:
Open Membership: Membership is voluntary and without regard to race, religion, sex, age or partisan politics. Democratic Control: Cooperatives are owner and controlled by their members. Patronage Refunds: This principle is the heart of the cooperative way of doing business. Cooperative exist solely to meet the needs of their members for goods and services. They do not exist to make money for investors. Limited or no interest on equity capital: This principle ensures that control of the cooperative will remain in the hands of all the members.
