American Electric Power - AEP shared Appalachian Power's post.
Here is some info for our Appalachian Power customers that have received higher bills this month.
We appreciate customers voicing their concerns about high power bills in the wake of the recent frigid weather. Single digit temperatures cause heating systems to work longer and harder to keep homes warm. The higher power bills are the result of this. Customers have inquired to whether rate increases or other issues are involved in recent bills. Here are some facts: 1. Our last electric rate increase in West Virginia was in 2016. While rates have risen over time, our price for electricity remains below the national average. 2. Appalachian Power reads meters every month remotely by radio frequency and the bills are based on actual usage. Typically one percent or fewer meter readings are estimated. 3. Space heaters can have a major impact on a power bill. Just one 1,500 watt space heater left on during a 13-day cold spell would consume $50 in electricity. There are ways to save energy with Appalachian Power. For more information, visit https://www.appalachianpower.com/save/residential/ to learn more.
