#RedTheMacaw is off to Sonora, Mexico on one of Amerind's cultural tours! Red and our other guests embarked this morning on an adventure to the beautiful Rio Sonora Valley and Banámichi, where they will visit a Bacanora distillery, enjoy the chiltepin chile harvest, and be serenaded by the music of the Ronstadt family and Los Tucsonenses.

We're excited for our 80th anniversary, Autumn Fest, & upcoming Paquimé exhibit & so is #redthemacaw! Join in the f twitter.com/i/web/status/9…

Meet Red, Amerind’s very own scarlet macaw! Amerind’s history with scarlet macaws goes back to the 1950s, when Amerind Director and archaeologist Dr. Charles C. Di Peso began his excavations at Paquimé, a major archaeological site in Chihuahua, Mexico. Di Peso and his team discovered that large scale macaw breeding had taken place at Paquimé, and that these birds and their feathers were widely traded across the ancient southwest. Di Peso was so taken with these exotic birds that he later brought his very own pet scarlet macaw- Red’s namesake- to live with him at Amerind. In the coming months, you might spot Red around the Amerind campus as we celebrate the archaeology, arts, and culture of Chihuahua at this year’s Autumn Fest and prepare for the opening of a new 80th anniversary exhibit showcasing Amerind’s work at Paquimé and recent archaeological investigations in Chihuahua! #redthemacaw #amerindmuseum
