In the April 2017 issue of “The Forum" magazine, an anonymous Al-Anon member shares: “After several months, the love, encouragement, care, understanding, friendship, and humor picked up in [Al-Anon] started to replace my negativity. I began to change my attitude. Yes, the members were usually all smiling and happy. I could not quite fathom their behavior. One particular meeting stands out vividly in my memory—when I shared the harrowing details of the most embarrassing, humiliating event in my life…The members struggled not to laugh and suppressed their mirth, not very successfully. At the end of that meeting someone came up to me and said, ‘Kathleen, one day you will laugh at that experience, and it will not hurt.' That person was right. Al-Anon gave me back my sense of humor." “Reaping a bounty in recovery," “The Forum" April 2017 To find an Al-Anon meeting in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico visit goo.gl/ojyYGe. In “The Forum" April 2017 magazine, an Al-Anon member shares: “After joining Al-Anon, I read a sentence in ‘As We Understood . . .' (B-11), ‘Gratitude changes your attitude.'… [It] showed me the extent of my negativity. If I were to change my attitude toward my mother and end the torment of this unhealthy relationship, it would be up to me to practice and feel gratitude toward my mom. I [decided] … that each time I had a negative thought or burst of anger concerning my mother, I would stop and write down three things about her for which I was grateful. Since I was consumed with hatred, it wasn't long before I was fully launched on this exercise. At first I struggled and wept. I couldn't find anything good to write, but I had committed myself to the task. I sincerely wished to end the pain of resentment, hate, and mistrust toward my mother. My first attempt at finding gratitude regarding my mom took me over an hour of searching. I knew that nobody in the world was all bad. Those first three items were pretty feeble, but they were honest. “I'm proud of myself for persisting in these exercises. I didn't want to continue at first, but as the weeks went by, I found I began enjoying them. One evening about five weeks after I started, I was surprised, upon reflection, that I hadn't written anything for which I was grateful. I also realized I had not had a single negative thought about my mother all day! I'm grateful beyond words that I haven't had any since then." “Changing a negative attitude with gratitude," “The Forum" April 2017 To find an Al-Anon meeting in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico visit goo.gl/ojyYGe. “I'd heard the slogan, ‘Keep an Open Mind' but never reflected on what that really meant… I learned about some aspects of open-mindedness I'd never considered—like letting go of the pictures in my mind of how things ought to be. As long as I clung to those pictures, I set myself up for disappointment or anger when real life didn't measure up. If I let go of them, I realized, I could be open to enjoying new experiences and outcomes." “Opening the doors of my mind," “The Forum" April 2017 To find an Al-Anon meeting in the U.S., Canada, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico visit goo.gl/ojyYGe. In an Al-Anon article about Step Four, an Al-Anon member shares: “Although I had made a couple of quick passes through parts of the original ‘Blueprint for Progress' (P-5), I was in Al-Anon quite some time before I felt ready to take a truly ‘searching and fearless moral inventory' of myself. There was a reason I had spent most of my life focusing on everyone except myself. I was sure that a Fourth Step would confirm my worst fears—I was inherently flawed, irreparably broken, and worthless. “I'm so grateful my Sponsor kept encouraging me to take a new, fresh look at myself. I was asked to consider seeing myself the way my kind, loving fellow members saw me—as talented, capable, and good-hearted, rather than as the pathetic failure that I'd been convinced I was due to the family disease of alcoholism. Taking a thorough Fourth Step wasn't quick or easy, but in examining all that I was, I discovered that I was so much more than the sum of my defects. It was a crucial beginning to my journey toward self-esteem and self-acceptance." “Instant meeting on Step Four," “The Forum" April 2017 Have you hit your bottom?
