Eudora Welty House

Eudora Welty was born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi. She moved to 1119 Pinehurst Street with her family when she was sixteen years old. Her parents built the Tudor-Revival style home in what is now known as the Belhaven neighborhood, just north of downtown Jackson. Eudora Welty’s mother, Chestina, designed the garden in 1925, while the house was being constructed. Eudora lived there for the remainder of her life in between her extensive travels. She kept her upstairs bedroom as a place to work and write and maintained her mother's garden throughout her life. Before her death in 2001, Welty donated her house to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. In 2006, the home opened to the public as one of the most intact literary house museums. Expert preservation of her manuscripts, memorabilia, and personal belongings keep her home feeling alive, maintaining forever her sense of place.
