Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute

The Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute started its programs in 1996 and since then has grown from a volunteer-led community based effort to become the most expansive environmental education provider in the Columbia River Gorge. CGEI serves an average of 1,000 youth annually, yet its extensive and in-depth programs consist of over 7,000 student contact days when considering the depth of the multiple programs each youth experiences throughout the Institute’s four program seasons.

The Ecology Institute’s SECRETS program has served regional communities since 1996. From a handful of classes when it began, the SECRETS program now reaches almost every 5th grade classroom in a 2,000 square mile service area and is known as the leader for outdoor education in the region.

In addition, The Ecology Institute offers middle school students the opportunity to engage in real-world field research with professional ecologists and conservation scientists; provides internships in conservation stewardship and community service for high school students; engages hundreds of youth in after and out-of-school experiences of their local places; works to restore critical habitats and a multitude of other programs.

The Ecology Institute’s programs continue to be enhanced and expanded to serve the communities throughout Columbia Gorge region. Current directions include the expansion of strategic partnerships to build regional efficiency in community-based education efforts related to the long-term preservation of the Gorge.
