René Schovon, owner of René’s Hair Shoppe in downtown Royal Oak, began her barbering career in 1975. René has been in the historical Washington Square Plaza Building for over 30 years. Originally working alongside father, the salon was first called Tommy Ingram’s Washington Square Plaza Barber Shop. When her father passed in 1978, René purchased the shop and changed the name to The Chopping Block.
In the ever-changing area of Royal Oak, René decided to renovate the tiny barbershop into what is now, Rene’s Hair Shoppe. Previously, clients were men only, but the salon has since expanded to include services for women and childen as well. Located on Sherman Drive, next to D’amato’s, Rene’s has been a familiar in the downtown scene for over 30 years.
Today, René and her trained staff are still giving the excellent service the public deserves. With many years of experience between them, Lynette (20 years) and Samantha (11 years) are both highly trained and skilled in their profession.
“In this economy, the competition is tough but we set ourselves apart by offering a warm, friendly, family atmosphere where everyone is welcome,” said René.
René’s customers come from not only Royal Oak but from all over the tri-county area, as well as out of state. Many of the same faithful customers have been returning for decades and have spread their likes for the salon through the best form of communication, “word of mouth”.
The recently passed ordiance for sidewalks in the city will soon also be part of the outside of René’s Hair Shoppe.
