Charleston Awning & Metal Company was created in the summer of 1946 by Charleston, native’s, the Dieter family. The family’s workshop has been located in the Charleston Heights neighborhood through many hurricanes and economic changes for over six decades. What began as a local blacksmith’s creative outlet quickly turned into a profitable hobby. After creating small railings and art pieces throughout the years, this hobby turned into a family business. Robert L. Dieter was the General manager of Charleston Awning & Metal for over 40 years. His wife, Marian H. Dieter, could be heard on the phones as the secretary and “keeper of the candy” for over 30 years. Since their retirement their son, David H. Dieter, took over the role of General Manager. David’s hand sketches have been transformed by his handy ironworkers into gates, railings, benches, and artwork for over twenty years. Many of his creations can be seen all over our beloved Charleston. David can be found at the family Charleston Heights workshop sketching new estimates or out on many job sights. He spends most of his free time tinkering in his “man-cave”,training his new boykin, Molly, and spending time with his wife and daughter. Many employees have come and gone over the years but General Contractor, Ronnie Wingo, has been getting the job done for over 15 years with the company. His loyalty to the company and compassion for blacksmithing has kept creativity flowing for many years. We love this city and all of the people in it! We are honored that the people of Charleston, have kept us in business for over 60 years.
